When people first hear that EMDR therapy can be delivered online, one of the most common questions is:
"Does it actually work as well as seeing someone in person?"
The short answer is yes.
Over the past several years, research has consistently shown that EMDR delivered via telehealth is just as effective as EMDR delivered face-to-face for many clients and presentations. In fact, many people find they prefer completing EMDR from the comfort and familiarity of their own home.
If you've been considering EMDR but live outside your therapist's local area, have a busy schedule, or simply feel more comfortable at home, telehealth could be an excellent option.
Is Telehealth EMDR Evidence-Based?
Yes.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, a growing body of research has demonstrated that EMDR can be delivered safely and effectively through secure video platforms.
Professional organisations, including the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) and the EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA), recognise telehealth as an appropriate way to deliver EMDR when it is clinically suitable.
Importantly, the key elements that make EMDR effective remain exactly the same. Your therapist still guides you through the eight phases of EMDR, helps you stay grounded throughout the process, and uses dual attention bilateral stimulation adapted for an online environment.
The therapy changes very little—the location simply changes.
Why Some People Prefer Telehealth
For many clients, telehealth isn't just a convenient alternative—it can actually enhance the therapeutic experience.
Some of the benefits include:
Comfort and familiarity
Many people feel safer and more relaxed in their own environment. Feeling comfortable can make it easier to engage with therapy and process difficult experiences.
No travel time
There's no need to commute, find parking, or rush to an appointment. This can reduce stress before your session and give you more time to settle afterwards.
Australia-wide access
Telehealth allows you to work with a therapist who is the right fit for you, regardless of where you live. Whether you're in a rural community, another state, simply can't access local EMDR services, or prefer a particular therapist, distance is no longer a barrier!
More flexibility
Telehealth often makes it easier to fit therapy around work, study, parenting, or other commitments.
Staying in your own safe space
After an emotionally meaningful EMDR session, many clients appreciate already being at home where they can rest, make a cup of tea, spend time with loved ones, or take a walk before returning to daily life.
What Does EMDR Look Like Online?
Surprisingly, it's very similar to an in-person session.
Your therapist will guide you through the entire process via secure video.
As well as following your therapist's fingers with your eyes, you may use:
- An online light bar
- Alternating audio tones through headphones
- Self-tapping (often called the "Butterfly Hug")
Your therapist will discuss which method feels most comfortable for you.
Throughout the session, you'll remain connected with your therapist, who will continually check in, help regulate the pace, and ensure you feel supported.
Preparing for Your Telehealth EMDR Session
A little preparation can make your session feel smoother and more comfortable.
Before your appointment, try to have:
✅ A quiet, private space where you won't be interrupted
✅ A reliable internet connection
✅ A computer, laptop, or large tablet with a camera (a larger screen is often easier than a phone)
✅ Headphones or earbuds (recommended for privacy and alternating audio)
✅ A comfortable chair with enough room to move your hands if needed
✅ A charged device or charger nearby
✅ Drinking water within reach
✅ Tissues nearby
✅ A comforting object, such as a blanket, cushion, favourite jumper, or fidget item
✅ At least five minutes before and after your session without rushing into other commitments
Will Telehealth Be Right for Everyone?
While telehealth is an excellent option for many people, it isn't always the best fit for every situation.
Your psychologist will carefully assess whether telehealth EMDR is appropriate for your individual needs, taking into account your goals, safety, current circumstances, and available supports.
If adjustments are needed, they'll work collaboratively with you to ensure therapy remains safe, effective, and tailored to you.
Healing Can Happen Wherever You Are
One of the most exciting things about telehealth is that quality psychological care is no longer limited by geography.
Whether you live in a major city, a regional town, or somewhere more remote, you can access evidence-based EMDR therapy from the comfort of your own home.
At Drop of Life, we provide secure telehealth EMDR appointments to clients across Australia. If you've been wondering whether EMDR could help you move beyond trauma, anxiety, or experiences that continue to leave you feeling stuck, we'd love to help.
Sometimes the first step towards healing is simply reaching out—and wherever you are, we're here to meet you there.
